information : Glossary

Below is provided a brief list and explanation of some basic terms used both in micronations in general and specifically in Slobovia. This is by no means a comprehensive listing.

Ab Sectora Condita A Latin phrase, translating to "from the founding of the Sector", which refers to the calendar of the Apollo Sector. It counts in days from the date considered to be the founding date of the Apollo Sector, 6 August 1999. Currently, its use is limited to certain uses in Shireroth.

active (1) An adjective used to describe a micronation which displays a consistent level of activity.

(2) An adjective used to describe a micronationalist who is in a consistent state of activity.

activity (1) A noun describing the quality of a micronation that it is obviously extant, particularly exemplified in the form of regular forum use by its citizens. A micronation lacking this quality is first considered inactive, then dormant and, finally, when all hope is lost of its recovery, either dead, defunct or extinct.

(2) A noun describing the quality of a micronationalist who consistently participates in the micronation, particularly by means of forum posts. A micronationalist who lacks this quality is considered inactive.

Apollo Sector A group of micronations, formed around the Audentior Independent Nation and the micronations it was in contact with, which existed in their own diplomatic sphere in 2000 and 2001. The diplomatic sphere of the former Apollo Sector later merged with that of several other micronations, which resulted in what is today the Micrasian Sector.

big lie Originally coined by Adolf Hitler in his 1925 book Mein Kampf, the term 'big lie' refers to a propaganda technique employing either a lie so colossal that no one would believe that someone could have told it if it wasn't true (Hitler's original sense), or the repetition of a lie so many times that it becomes accepted as truth (a more modern sense). In a micronational context, it usually refers to attempts by some micronations to employ these strategies in exaggerations of their population levels and the durations of their existence.

bug A pejorative for a micronationalist who is thought to not be serious enough, or to be of no use to micronationalism. The term has largely fallen out of use within the past half decade, and its use was always limited to a subset of micronationalism that was largely elitist. No clear definition of 'serious' or 'useful' was given by those who used this term, and its use was extremely subjective.

bug nation A pejorative for a micronation thought to not be serious enough. Derrived from bug.

conlang A colloquial abbreviation of "constructed language", a language whose phonology, grammar, and/or vocabulary have been intentionally created by a person or group of persons, as opposed to having developed naturally. Conlangs are a common cultural institution in many micronations, including Slobovia.

dead Used to describe a micronation which has been devoid of activity for so long as to dispel any reasonable hopes of revival. Describes a micronation that can be reasonably said to be no longer extant.

defunct See dead.

diplomania The tendency of many micronations to seek many quantitative diplomatic relationships with other micronations, as opposed to fewer relationships of greater quality.

diplomaniac A supporter of the tendency of diplomania.

diplomanic Of or pertaining to a person or micronation that exhibits diplomania.

dormant An adjective describing a micronation that is in a state of suspended existence, in a temporary limbo between being inactive and dead. In this state, the micronation has been inactive for long enough to warrant serious questions about whether or not it continues to exist, but a reasonable chance still remains that it may recover.

extinct See dead.

Faðrlien A title of respect given to Tregh Tomsohnd upon his resignation from the Slobovish Presidency to serve in the Arminian Parliament in 2004. In Slobovish, it literally means "Dear Father", and was granted in reference to Tomsohnd's status as the founder of Slobovia.

fossil The outdated and still extant website of an inactive, dormant or dead micronation. Fossils used to cause difficulties for other micronations, as they could cause the mistake of thinking the nations they belonged to were still extant. This problem has largely diminished since the closure of geocities, however.

IML "In Micronational Life", a micronational analogue to the common internet initialism IRL.

IRL A common initialism in internet slang, of "In Real Life". Typically refers to social and professional interactions done in a face-to-face manner, rather than via a computer network.

Micras A fictional planet created specifically for the purpose of hosting recreational micronations, and administered by the Micronational Cartography Society.

Micrasian Sector A group of micronations, formed on and around Micras, whose members have shared a common diplomatic sphere since around 2002.

paple Originally a plural term, derrived from paper and people, for aliases mantained by people with the deliberate intent of making others think that they aliases were seperate persons, the term has since morphed into a singular for the same concept.

SAS The primary accepted initialism for the Socialist Arwakung Party of Slobovia (Sozialistische Arwakungpartie Slobowiens), which has been the dominant political party in Slobovia for most of the period since October 2003, except for the Kingdom era of 2005.

war In micronations, war can happen in two ways. There's recreational warfare (recwars), which focus around play-by-post wargaming and are the most common form of micronational warfare in the present. Also, there's electronic warfare, which involves actual destructive activities, such as hacking, smiley bombs, etc., which have generally fallen out of use since 2002.

YAMO "Yet Another Micronational Organization"; originated as a pejorative for a wide variety of purposeless attempts to form micronational equivalents to the UN.
